Cant talk about the Alinco, but I have the 878 and for me one of the main reasons was that it can do APRS as one of the first DMR radios that can actually do something with the built in GPS.The sound quality is the best I ever heard in a HT (receiving) and from I have heard folks the sound quality transmitting is on par with Motorola and other high priced radios.Transmit on analog is 7.8W on VHF and 5.6W on UHF down to 0.5W on low. (with two steps in between).
With the slightly larger battery I usually have about 60=70% battery left after having the radio on next to me all day long and some (shorter) QSOs. I have the Alinco, it works great and the only complaint I have is that the volume is just a little low for me, but I don't think I've found any HT yet that I was extremely happy with the volume so it could just be my hearing.FPP was easy enough once I figured out you had to type in the frequency to, I think it was, 5 decimal places.I have used it for both analog and DMR and have no complaints from the other end on sound quality.Other differences you may not have noticed,Alinco uses a standard micro-usb for the programming cable, and not through the Mic/Speaker ports like most other radios. A big plus to me, because who doesn't have a million of those around, but can't find that one cable you need.878 has P1 and P2 buttons, Alinco does not.Alinco is cheaper.Overall I am happy with my purchase. Although I wish it had APRS. I have the DJ-MD5TGP, and after looking just a little bit further into the P1/P2 buttons, you are correct, it has them on the side. I did not realize that's what they were called on the Alinco.

The 878 has them on the front, but also has 2 buttons on the side that I do not know their function.I had not seen the firmware update, and just installed it as well as the new CPS and I do see the Digital APRS Information option. From a at that, it looks like that is digital only and does not include analog APRS, which I think the 878 does analog (but I don't have one so I don't know that for fact.)As for the CPS install, make sure you are not getting an infected copy. Remtronix is the US distributor and has the CPS and new firmware hosted on their website atThe download from Remtronix for me.If you are still having problems, make sure Kaspersky is up to date, if that fails, I would personally disable Kaspersky temporarily, get the CPS installed and there should be a way to exclude the CPS install folder. Once excluded from scanning I would turn Kaspersky back on and see if it behaves.
